Description
Full time, Permanent
Help the British Library on its journey to Net Zero.
As one of the world’s great libraries, our duty is to preserve the nation’s
intellectual memory for the future and make it available to all for research,
inspiration and enjoyment. We have well
over 170 million items, in most known languages, with three million new items
added every year. Many millions of documents are consulted on our website each
year. What matters to us is that we
preserve the national memory and enable knowledge to be created both now and in
the future by anyone, anywhere.
From our iconic, Grade I Listed
building in St Pancras, London to our 43 acre campus near Boston Spa, North
Yorkshire, the British Library property portfolio is large, impressive and
varied. Equally impressive is the fabric
of our buildings, and the engineering systems which support our collection
storage, access to these collection, and a great experience for staff and
visitors.
Having completed a series of building
consolidations in the past decade, our new strategy to 2030 includes a major
extension of St Pancras public space, the renewal of Boston Spa, and the
potential for a new presence in Leeds.
We have also made significant progress over the past decade, reducing energy
and CO2 emissions by 68% and waste by 50% between 2009/10 and 2018/19. Thanks to a generous Public Sector
Decarbonisation Scheme Grant, we have several carbon reduction projects nearing
completion at each of our two sites, which in total will reduce carbon emissions
by more than 900 tCO2e each year.
Now however, we have to step up our game.
We want to be net-zero by 2050 or before. This is going to require a tremendous effort
across all areas of the Library, starting with Collection Care and Estates but
extending to Finance and Supply Chain Management, Exhibitions, Learning – in
fact all of our audiences and suppliers.
You will be supported by colleagues across the Library who share the
vision of a truly sustainable National Library.
Summary of responsibilities
The successful candidate will have substantial knowledge and experience of sustainable best practice, policy and communication in a large or complex organisation. Your key skills will include:
- In-depth knowledge of sustainable systems, and strategy development (supported by an appropriate professional qualification and/or membership), including Net Zero.
- Internal and external stakeholder management.
- First class oral and written communication.
- IT, including generation of report.
Above all, you will have a passion for
the environment, and the appropriate knowledge and enthusiasm to help us excel
in our journey to Net Zero..
You
will be joining an institution with unique and wonderful buildings and
collections, with a vision for a sustainable future and many exciting related
opportunities.
We offer a competitive salary and a number of excellent benefits. Our pension
scheme is one of the most valuable benefits we offer, as our staff can become
members of the Alpha Pension Scheme where the Library contributes a minimum of
26.6%. Another significant benefit the
Library provides is the provision of a flexible working hours scheme which
could allow you to work your hours flexibly over the week and to take up to 5
days flexi leave in a 3 month period. This is on top of 25 days holiday from
entry and public and privilege holidays.
