Description
Full time, Permanent
Play a key part in developing and delivering our new Estates Strategy.
As one of the world’s great libraries, our duty is to preserve the nation’s
intellectual memory for the future and make it available to all for research, inspiration
and enjoyment. We have well over 170 million items, in most known languages,
with three million new items added every year. Many millions of documents are
consulted on our website each year. What matters to us is that we preserve the
national memory and enable knowledge to be created both now and in the future
by anyone, anywhere.
From our iconic, Grade I Listed building in St Pancras, London to our 43 acre campus in Boston Spa, North Yorkshire, the British Library property portfolio is large, impressive and varied. Equally impressive is the fabric of our buildings, and the engineering systems which support our collection storage, access to the collections, and a great experience for staff and visitors.
The BL property portfolio currently
comprises 2 freehold sites. Total floor area exceeds 2 million ft2. The estate
has c. 13,000 engineering assets.
Engineering services are delivered to both sites via an Estates Maintenance
Contract. The contract includes:
• Maintenance of the estate: all plant and building fabric. The contract team comprises c. 46 on-site
staff, plus visiting staff and numerous subcontractors.
• Project delivery, ranging from investment works and improvements to the
replacement of plant and equipment; to space planning, office moves and the
creation of new facilities.
• Energy reporting and reduction.
• H&S management, including supporting wider Library activity such as
public and commercial events.
This and other engineering contracts are managed by a team of 4 in-house
engineers, who are based in St Pancras and visit Boston Spa as necessary. The team are technical specialists and act as
an Intelligent Client, supporting the Estates Maintenance team in a partnering
style contract.
Having completed a series of building consolidations in the past decade, our
new strategy to 2030 includes a major extension of St Pancras public space, the
renewal of Boston Spa, and the potential for a new presence in Leeds.
In addition to having extensive building management, fire alarm and HVAC
systems, we also have more specialist systems including centralised steam,
automated book storage and retrieval systems, and reduced oxygen fire
protection.
