The British Library is one of the world’s most significant research
Libraries, holding a vast collection of material, which is used by people from
all over the world. This presents us with a complex variety of contractual
opportunities and challenges, both from a commercial and non-commercial
The Legal and Contracts Services (LCS) team is the first point of contact for advice on legal and contractual matters, providing a wide range of legal and contract support. As a member of our evolving team, both roles will deliver a robust legal advisory and contract- drafting service to the Library.
You will have proven experience in negotiating, drafting and amending contracts and licence agreements crossing the range of the Library’s commercial and non-commercial activity with other bodies including, for example, publishers; PLC’s; rights holders; information brokers; other libraries; universities; museums; funding bodies; charitable institutions and scientific/research bodies throughout the world.
You will have extensive experience of drafting and negotiating contracts with significant financial and strategic implications; determining the Library’s rights and obligations on specific issues (such as regulatory prerequisites, legal compliance, licence construction or changes in legislation); advising on the acceptability or otherwise of contractual arrangements proposed to the Library by external bodies; and reporting in depth on the risks, implications and negotiating alternatives in order to enable and safeguard the interests of the Library.
You will provide specialist advice and consultancy on contract management issues, supporting a number of complex change programmes and advising upon the efficacy and robustness of legal frameworks. This requires an in-depth knowledge of Contract Law and Company related Law and the ability to assimilate information quickly and concisely. You will need to prioritise large workloads, whilst managing customer expectations. The roles are dependent on team working, supporting colleagues, engaging with stakeholders as well as working on your own initiative.
You will ideally be LPC accredited with 3 years PQE or equivalent comparable qualifications and experience working in a similar role in a public sector or culture environment. This is an exciting opportunity for a legal and contracts professional to begin a career path at the Library and as an integral part of the Legal and Contracts Services team you will be representing this important national and international institution.
